Japanese video game stocks experienced a sharp decline following new tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump's administration.

The White House outlined targeted reciprocal tariffs affecting approximately 60 nations deemed trade "offenders," set to take effect April 9. Japan faces a 24% tariff rate under these measures.

Administration officials claim these nations impose higher tariffs on American exports, maintain non-tariff trade barriers, or engage in practices that undermine U.S. economic interests.

Import tariffs function as taxes on specific goods, with costs typically absorbed by supply chains or passed to consumers. Gaming hardware and tech products appear particularly vulnerable to price increases.

Asian markets reacted strongly: Japan's Nikkei 225 dropped 7.8%, Australia's ASX 200 fell 4.2%, and South Korea's Kospi declined 5.6%. China's Shanghai Composite plunged 7.3%, Taiwan's index lost 9.7%, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng tumbled 12.5%.

Dr. Serkan Toto of Kantan Games reported April 7 opening figures showing Nintendo down 7.35%, Sony plunging 10.16%, Capcom falling 7.13%, and Sega declining 6.57%.

Nintendo recently postponed U.S. Switch 2 preorders from April 9, citing tariff uncertainty, while maintaining its June 5 launch date and international preorder schedule.

The Switch 2 base model launches at $449.99, with a $499.99 Mario Kart World bundle. The standalone Mario Kart World retails for $79.99.

Switch 2 package includes:

Console unit
Joy-Con 2 controllers (left + right)
Joy-Con 2 Grip attachment
Wrist straps
Docking station
Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable
AC adapter
USB-C charging cable

Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad cautioned that Nintendo's manufacturing shift to Vietnam - intended to avoid Chinese tariffs - faces new challenges with unexpected Vietnam tariffs.

"While Nintendo diversified production to Vietnam, these new reciprocal tariffs likely prompted global pricing reassessments," Ahmad explained. "The higher-than-anticipated rates could significantly impact Nintendo if fully implemented."

The company now faces pressure to increase Switch 2 pricing further, following initial consumer feedback about its launch costs.
