Team Ninja has officially unveiled Nioh 3 during Sony’s State of Play presentation, marking a major moment for fans of the intense action RPG series. The debut trailer showcased an immersive gameplay experience set in expansive open fields, and revealed a planned release window for early 2026.

PlayHere's the official description from PlayStation Blog:

In Nioh 3, players step into the shoes of a young warrior destined to become the next Shogun. His relentless fight against yokai is steeped in mystery, but today we’re focusing on what’s new—two distinct combat styles: Samurai and Ninja.

The Samurai style delivers the familiar yet refined gameplay seen in previous Nioh titles. Enhancements like Arts Proficiency, which boosts martial arts strength, and Deflect, allowing last-second enemy attack blocks, create thrilling close-quarters combat scenarios filled with intensity and precision.

On the flip side, the Ninja style emphasizes agility and fast-paced movement. Players can dodge, leap, and strike from beyond enemy reach using adaptive Ninjitsu techniques tailored to battlefield conditions. Unique mechanics such as Mist, which leaves behind a clone after an attack, and Evade, letting you narrowly escape enemy blows, allow for dynamic hit-and-run strategies that keep opponents guessing.

With seamless switching between both styles at any time, players are free to choose their preferred approach—whether it’s blending both or sticking to one throughout. Depending on enemy behavior and level design, some may find hybrid tactics most effective, while others lean fully into either Samurai endurance or Ninja speed. Whichever path you take, prepare to face the fiercest yokai yet.

Beyond the new combat systems, Nioh 3 introduces vast open fields that elevate exploration while preserving the signature tension of the series. Encounter terrifying yokai in unexpected places, investigate eerie villages hiding dark histories, and test your skills in the brutal challenge known as The Crucible. Traverse hostile, cursed landscapes packed with danger at every turn, all while fighting to survive in a world where death lurks around every corner.

At IGN, we've long been fans of the Nioh franchise. We awarded the original Nioh a 9.6/10, calling it “an epic, unforgettable adventure carried by a fierce combat system that cleverly balances style and strategy.” Nioh 2 also received high praise with a 9/10, praised for its deep gameplay despite its complexity, noting that “the stellar combat and satisfying difficulty make it worth it.”

Since the 2020 launch of Nioh 2, Team Ninja has remained active with other high-profile projects such as Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Rise of the Rōnin, and the highly anticipated Ninja Gaiden 4. Now with Nioh 3 officially confirmed, anticipation is at an all-time high.

A playable demo is now available, giving fans a first-hand taste of what’s to come.
