Paradox Interactive has officially unveiled Europa Universalis 5, the highly anticipated next installment in its legendary grand strategy series, following a cryptic teaser released just days ago.
The developer and publisher behind beloved titles like Cities: Skylines, Crusader Kings, and Stellaris has launched a dramatic cinematic trailer to introduce the game. Developed by Paradox Tinto—the Barcelona-based studio that has contributed significantly to Europa Universalis 4 in recent years—Europa Universalis 5 is already generating excitement. While no official release date has been announced, the game’s Steam page is now live.
“Test your strategic prowess across 500 years of history in Europa Universalis 5, the newest chapter in the iconic grand strategy franchise,” reads an official description from Paradox. “Navigate the complexities of warfare, commerce, diplomacy, and governance in what promises to be the most expansive and intricate Europa Universalis experience yet. Shape the future of any one of hundreds of nations and societies within a living, dynamic world filled with unprecedented depth.”
With over five years of development already invested, Paradox Tinto emphasizes that Europa Universalis 5 was crafted specifically for the dedicated Paradox fanbase. The team has taken extensive feedback from more than a year of public discussion into account, ensuring the community's voice played a pivotal role in shaping what it calls “the largest and most detailed Europa Universalis game ever made.”
Set against the backdrop of history’s defining moments, Europa Universalis 5 begins its campaign at the outbreak of the Hundred Years’ War in 1337. As players guide their chosen nation through centuries of change, they’ll encounter a host of new features designed to enhance immersion and strategic depth.
Among the highlights revealed today is a newly expanded map built using accurate historical projections, representing hundreds of distinct societies. For the first time, the game introduces a population-based system, alongside refined production and trade mechanics. Players will have the opportunity to expand their influence by constructing farms, plantations, and factories or engaging in complex trade networks with neighboring regions.
Ultimately, these enhancements aim to deliver a deeply customizable strategy experience, empowering players to shape and manage their nation exactly as they envision. Although last week’s tease described the project as “mysterious” and “ambitious,” many fans had already speculated on the reveal based on earlier hints and rumors circulating online.

“Europa Universalis 5 expands upon the series' foundation—building and evolving nations from a meticulously researched historical world,” the official description adds. “It introduces deeper diplomatic interactions, a more advanced economic framework, a revamped military system, and enhanced logistical elements that will challenge even the most seasoned strategy veterans.”
Europa Universalis 5 is currently scheduled for a PC release at some point in the future. In the meantime, you can read our hands-on preview here.
