Master the Art of Parrying in Avowed: A Comprehensive Guide
Parrying in Avowed offers a thrilling counter-attack mechanic, transforming enemy aggression into devastating offensive opportunities. This guide details how to unlock and effectively utilize this crucial skill.
Unlocking the Parry Ability:

The Parry ability isn't initially available. To unlock it, navigate to the "Abilities" menu, then select the "Ranger" tab. You'll find Parry in the top middle column. This requires allocating an Ability point to any of the three core skill trees. Once this is done, you can unlock Parry.
Parry has three ranks, each with increasing effectiveness:
| Rank | Player Level Requirement | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | N/A (1 Ability Point) | Unlocks the Parry ability. |
| 2 | 5 | Increases Parry efficiency by 25%, enhancing stun. |
| 3 | 8 | Increases Parry efficiency by 50%, enhancing stun. |
At player level 10, the "Arrow Deflection" ability unlocks, allowing you to parry projectiles.
Executing a Parry:
Successful parrying requires precise timing—blocking immediately before an enemy attack connects. A metallic clang and a visual cue confirm a successful parry, staggering the opponent. Mastering the timing requires practice, but it's less demanding than in titles like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.
Limitations of Parrying:
Not all attacks are parryable. Attacks indicated by a red circle necessitate dodging. Furthermore, only single-handed and two-handed weapons (not in your off-hand) and shields (in your off-hand) can be used to parry. Ranged weapons (guns, wands, bows) and grimoires cannot parry.
Benefits and Strategic Considerations:
Parrying stuns attackers, creating openings for significant damage. It's exceptionally effective for melee builds, allowing damage mitigation and increased offensive potential. However, ranged-focused characters may find it less beneficial. Avowed's respec system allows for easy adjustment if you choose to remove the Parry ability later.
