PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But Not a Hole-in-One

If 2K were to poll gamers on which pro sports franchise they'd most like to see resurrected, a revamped NFL 2K would undoubtedly top the list. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours of gameplay, it's clear there's much to enjoy.

HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for over a decade, starting with The Golf Club. This experience shines in 2K25. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an extensive roster of real-world courses (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the core gameplay is undeniably fun. Minor issues, such as occasional framerate hiccups on PC, are easily overlooked.

PlayThe improved EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Controller users will appreciate the right stick control, allowing for nuanced shot shaping. Difficulty levels cater to both casual and hardcore players, offering options from forgiving Perfect Swing to a more challenging, realistic experience. The ability to adjust tee shots laterally adds a strategic layer. Playing as cover athlete Tiger Woods certainly enhanced the initial experience.

MyCareer mode receives a welcome boost with narrative elements, similar to other sports titles. The inclusion of Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing) adds a touch of humor. Player choices impact stat boosts, and earned VC unlocks gear that further enhances stats. The addition of regularly refreshed Quests provides ongoing goals.

PlayMyPlayer creation offers robust customization, including skill trees. While multiplayer wasn't tested, the promise of ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies suggests engaging social gameplay. Asynchronous options cater to players with differing time zones.

PGA Tour 2K25 excels without truly dominating any single aspect. This makes it hard to generate overwhelming excitement, but it appears to be a solid choice for golf enthusiasts and those seeking a relaxing gaming experience. A playable demo is currently available.
