A new report sheds light on a first-party PlayStation game code-named Gummy Bears, which is said to take significant inspiration from the Super Smash Bros. series. The Game Post initially reported the existence of Gummy Bears in August 2023, describing it as a MOBA in development at Bungie. However, following Bungie's announcement of laying off 220 employees and integrating 155 into Sony Interactive Entertainment, a new PlayStation studio has reportedly taken over the project.
According to The Game Post, this new studio, which consists of around 40 employees, is now responsible for Gummy Bears. Although the game's release is likely years away, its current development stage remains undisclosed. The report highlights that Gummy Bears will not feature traditional health bars; instead, it will use a percentage-based damage system similar to Super Smash Bros. When a character's damage percentage becomes high enough, they can be knocked off the map.
Gummy Bears is expected to include three character classes typical of MOBA games: Attack, Defense, and Support. The game will also offer multiple game modes and boast an aesthetic described as cozy, vibrant, and "lo-fi." These elements are a departure from Bungie's previous work, intentionally designed to appeal to a younger demographic.
Development on Gummy Bears began at least in 2022 while at Bungie. The recent shift to a new PlayStation studio in Los Angeles aligns with reports of a new studio established by PlayStation, potentially the same one working on Gummy Bears.
