Pokémon GO is launching one of its most substantial social updates in years, finally addressing a question Trainers have asked since 2016: why can’t they trade with someone on the other side of the world? The answer has arrived, in a way.

Remote Trading and the new Forever Friends tier have begun a phased rollout, starting in New Zealand before expanding worldwide.

Forever Friends is a new tier above Best Friends, functioning as a long-term relationship tracker. By consistently interacting with a friend—through battles, sending Gifts, trading, or making weekly challenge progress—you'll eventually reach a new milestone that unlocks a Remote Trade with them.

From there, ongoing interactions earn more friendship points, granting additional Remote Trades over time. There is a small limitation: you can only hold one available Remote Trade at a time per Forever Friend, so it’s best to use them before you miss out.

To facilitate this, Niantic has introduced a Remote Trade tag. You pre-select Pokémon you're willing to trade, your Forever Friends do the same, and both sides create a wishlist from each other’s tagged offers.

Each Trainer picks one requested Pokémon, reviews the final trade pairing, and can either accept or reset the proposal. Lucky Friends still guarantee a Lucky trade outcome, even remotely, and these trades do not count toward your Special Trade limit.

Naturally, there are some restrictions. Recently caught Pokémon, previously traded Pokémon, Mythicals, Shadow Pokémon, Buddies, defenders, fused forms, crowned Zacian or Zamazenta, and anything caught in the last 30 days are not eligible.

But for completing long-term collections or swapping regionals that once required a plane ticket, this is easily the game's largest friendship update to date.
