The next Dune film from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures is gaining momentum. Director Denis Villeneuve is confirmed for Dune 3, alongside key cast members Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, and Anya Taylor-Joy. Now, a significant new actor may join the ensemble for Part 3. According to Deadline, Robert Pattinson is in consideration for a major part in Dune 3. It seems The Batman is not the only major Warner Bros. franchise where Pattinson might leave his mark in the coming years.

At this early stage, the character Pattinson will portray remains unconfirmed, though The Hollywood Reporter indicates he may play a villain. Given the cliffhangers from Dune: Part Two and clues from Frank Herbert’s original novels, we can speculate on likely roles. Let’s explore the Dune characters Pattinson could bring to life in the next movie.

Scytale

If Dune 3 adheres primarily to the events of the sequel novel, Dune Messiah, and reserves later books like Children of Dune for future installments, there are limited new characters Pattinson might embody. If he takes on a role from Dune Messiah outside of Leto II, we’d bet on Scytale—and as it turns out, that’s the very role The Hollywood Reporter suggests.

Scytale serves as Messiah’s principal antagonist. He masterminds a plot to overthrow Emperor Paul Atreides, who governs the galaxy with an army of devout Fremen followers. While the first two Dune movies trace Paul’s transformation from sheltered duke’s son to hardened Fremen messiah, the third film is poised to reveal the perils of his newfound power. The burdens of the crown are indeed heavy.

Conspiring against Paul is no easy task, as he possesses a superhuman gift of foresight. Scytale and his allies—including Charlotte Rampling’s Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam—manage only by allying with Edric, a Guild Navigator. Due to the immense quantities of spice consumed by Navigators, they distort spacetime and evade Paul’s clairvoyant sight—for the most part.

Scytale is a compelling figure, one that would allow Pattinson to embrace a truly meaty role. A shapeshifting Face Dancer (others of which appear in the Dune: Prophecy prequel series), he belongs to the technologically advanced Bene Tleilax. Pattinson has frequently leaned toward heroic characters in his franchise work, making Scytale an exciting opportunity to explore a darker side.

Furthermore, portraying Scytale leaves the door open for Pattinson to appear in future sequels. Without giving away the ending of Dune Messiah, it’s safe to say that neither time nor death are permanent obstacles to character returns in this universe.

This is likely the role Pattinson will take in Dune 3. But other intriguing possibilities remain. Let’s examine other villainous Dune roles that could suit his talents.

Play

Leto Atreides II

Since Pattinson is a major star with a noticeable resemblance to Chalamet, it’s natural to consider another member of the Atreides dynasty—one of the most crucial figures in the Dune saga. Could Pattinson portray Paul’s son, Leto Atreides II?

It’s worth noting that two Leto IIs appear in the Dune series, both named for Paul’s late father (played by Oscar Isaac in the first film). Paul’s firstborn son, Leto Atreides II the Elder, briefly appears in the original novel, where he is killed in a Sardaukar assault that drives Paul toward vengeance against the Harkonnens. That Leto II functions more as a tragic motivator than a fully developed individual. Dune: Part Two omits this storyline altogether.

The younger Leto Atreides II debuts in Dune Messiah. Though an infant in that story, he becomes the central protagonist of Children of Dune and ultimately evolves into the antagonist and catalyst of God Emperor of Dune. The strange half-human, half-sandworm figure on the cover of God Emperor? That’s Leto II. James McAvoy portrayed a younger version of the character in the 2003 Children of Dune miniseries.

Since Dune 3 is positioned as an adaptation of Dune Messiah, casting Pattinson as an infant might seem unusual. But as Dune: Part Two illustrated, the films expand on the source material by including Paul’s spice-induced visions of future relatives. Anya Taylor-Joy appears as Paul’s unborn sister Alia, so it’s plausible Pattinson could appear as Leto II in a spice vision.

Additionally, the movies appear to be charting their own course. As previously discussed, Dune: Part Two places Zendaya’s Chani in a markedly different position compared to the books. It’s also possible Villeneuve’s next film could merge elements of Messiah and Children of Dune, as the miniseries did.

However Dune 3 justifies Pattinson playing Leto II—if that’s the direction—the key takeaway is that this casting would secure his involvement in the franchise long-term. After all, the younger Leto II is one of the most significant characters in this sprawling sci-fi epic. And truly, we won’t be satisfied until we see Pattinson inhabit Leto as a pompous, sermonizing worm-god.

Prince Farad'n Corrino

Another possibility arises if Dune 3 blends plotlines from Dune Messiah and Children of Dune. Could Pattinson play Prince Farad’n?

Farad’n is a key antagonist in Children of Dune. Grandson of the deposed Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV (Christopher Walken in Dune: Part Two), he embodies his family’s final hope to reclaim the imperial throne. Raised on the harsh world of Salusa Secundus and trained as a Sardaukar, his world revolves around battle, rain, and ritual chanting.

Farad’n stands out because he does not covet Paul’s throne with the same fervor as his mother, Wensicia. He would prefer a quiet life of scholarship. If the goal is to cast Pattinson as a more sympathetic antagonist in this dark universe, Farad’n fits perfectly.

A New Fremen Character

Dune: Part Two introduces substantial changes to the original story, especially regarding Chani. In the first novel, she willingly joins Paul’s cosmic crusade, but the movie concludes with her rejecting his holy war, returning to Arrakis disillusioned by the messiah she once loved.

That unresolved thread alone suggests Dune 3 will not be a line-for-line adaptation of Dune Messiah. Considering that, we wonder how many other major revisions the next film will introduce. What original characters might Villeneuve invent? Will there be villains absent from the classic novels? Could Pattinson play one?

It’s entirely possible. Imagine Pattinson as a brand new character aligned with Chani’s anti-Paul Fremen faction. She represents the newer generation of Fremen skeptical of Paul and his promise of galactic carnage. Could Pattinson play a Fremen rebel who rises against Paul in Chani’s name? Might he become a successor—perhaps less disturbing—to Austin Butler’s Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen?

Viewed through that lens, he would only be an antagonist from Paul’s perspective. Herbert consistently framed the Dune novels as warnings against charismatic authority. It would be fitting to cast Pattinson as a voice of opposition, arguing that massacring billions to secure a throne is inherently wrong.

Perhaps Dune 3 could even build a love triangle between Paul, Chani, and Pattinson’s character. Despite her revulsion toward Paul’s actions, Chani likely still harbors feelings for him. Somehow, the sequel must arrange for her to become pregnant and give birth to Leto II and his twin sister Ghanima. She may face an ultimate choice between Timothée Chalamet and Robert Pattinson—a difficult dilemma indeed.
