Scarlett Johansson, a stalwart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has firmly declared that her character, Black Widow, is "dead" and she doesn’t seem interested in reprising the role anytime soon. Johansson shared her thoughts on the future of the Avenger during an interview with InStyle. As she sets her sights on making an impact in another blockbuster franchise, this summer's Jurassic World Rebirth, fans of the MCU have been buzzing about what might bring her back as Natasha Romanoff. Despite Black Widow's significant role in Johansson's career, she appears uninterested in returning to the character.
"Natasha is dead. She is dead. *She's dead.* Okay?" Johansson stated emphatically, addressing fans' hopes for her return. "We’re going to *have* to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment." Although Johansson last portrayed Black Widow in the 2021 standalone film, the character met her definitive end in 2019's Avengers: Endgame by sacrificing herself to save Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye. Despite this clear narrative closure, fans have continued to speculate about potential comebacks.
"They just don't want to believe it," Johansson added. "They’re like, ‘But she could come back!’ Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand. We’re going to *have* to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment."
The MCU community has a history of hoping for the return of deceased characters, a sentiment that predates Black Widow's sacrifice for the Soul Stone. Upcoming films like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are anticipated not only as the next chapters in the MCU saga but also as potential vehicles for numerous character cameos.
### Every MCU Movie Tier ListIt's confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. will transition from Iron Man to play Doctor Doom in a new live-action film after more than a decade. Meanwhile, rumors have swirled about other familiar faces returning, such as The Wrap's December report that Chris Evans would return as Captain America, a claim he later denied. This has kept fans guessing about how he might figure into future MCU projects.
Hayley Atwell’s Agent Carter, who has died twice in MCU movies, is also rumored to appear in next year’s Doomsday project. With so many beloved characters potentially returning, it's understandable why fans continue to speculate about who might make a comeback, even as Johansson dismisses any possibility of Black Widow's revival. Fans will need to wait until May 1, 2026, for Avengers: Doomsday, and May 7, 2027, for Avengers: Secret Wars to find out who, living or dead, will grace the screen.
