As Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2's Siege Mode intensifies, players battle relentless waves of Thousand Sons and Tyranid forces while striving for maximum progression. Beyond connectivity issues and progress-blocking bugs, some face a greater obstacle: Chaos itself.
Siege Mode pits players against alternating waves from two opposing factions: the warp-corrupted Thousand Sons traitor legion and the hive-minded Tyranid swarm. Neither faction offers solo play options – both Chaos and Tyranid assaults arrive in distinct waves.
This design frustrates Space Marine 2 players who find Tyranid combat significantly more engaging than Chaos encounters. The distinction stems from each faction's unique combat dynamics. Tyranids overwhelm with sheer numbers, flooding battlefields with hordes of lesser creatures punctuated by deadly bioforms. Players relish the visceral thrill of chainswords tearing through chitin, perfectly timed parries creating counterattack opportunities, and the primal satisfaction of power-fisting a Hormagaunt mid-leap.
The Thousand Sons deliver a more tactical combat experience. Fighting fellow Astartes – albeit Chaos-corrupted – creates fundamentally different engagements. Dealing with Terminator spawns and psychic bombardments transforms Chaos battles into grueling endurance tests. Where Tyranid fights offer cathartic carnage, Chaos encounters demand Souls-like precision and environmental awareness.
The difficulty disparity escalates dramatically at higher tiers. While lower difficulties maintain parity between factions, Chaos encounters become disproportionately punishing when pursuing Siege Mode's progression requirements – leaving Tyranid engagements feeling comparatively balanced.
This isn't merely a difficulty imbalance. Both factions brilliantly embody their tabletop origins: Tyranids capture the nightmarish swarm mentality, while Thousand Sons authentically represent their rubric-wrought sorcery and disciplined heresy. Their contrasting designs serve distinct gameplay purposes.

The faction preference persists among Space Marine 2's player base since its September launch. Some Operation Mode veterans openly admit abandoning Siege matches upon encountering Chaos waves.
"Any way to face Tyranids exclusively in Siege Mode?" inquired Think_Fan_5943 on the Space Marine subreddit. "Chaos encounters feel tedious compared to Tyranid battles. Since Operations offers faction selection, why can't Siege Mode implement similar options?"
Saber Interactive seems unlikely to introduce Tyranid-exclusive Siege Mode queues – doing so might destabilize Chaos matchmaking pools given current player preferences. While this imbalance persists, the Tyranid-Chaos debate fuels intriguing speculation about Space Marine 3's potential adversaries.
How might the Necrons' quantum-based warfare challenge the Ultramarines? Could alternative Traitor Legions offer fresher combat scenarios? Imagine facing Death Guard's resilience amidst their plague-ridden battlefields, or encountering revamped Ork forces echoing Space Marine 1's brutal encounters.
Presently, Siege Mode continues challenging players with both Tyranid and Chaos threats regardless of preference. The upcoming Space Marine 2 content roadmap promises exciting additions – while Patch 9 focuses on balancing, Patch 10 introduces Chaos-versus-Chaos PvP, Power Axes, and the Techmarine class.
