Square Enix has canceled its mobile spin-off, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, part of the acclaimed ARPG series. Following multiple delays, including a postponed Android closed beta, the company has decided to abandon the project and redirect resources to Kingdom Hearts IV.
Set in an unexplored chapter of the Kingdom Hearts universe, Missing-Link promised GPS-driven gameplay paired with classic ARPG combat. Players would wield iconic keyblades to battle waves of Heartless threatening the world.
The GPS integration was a major highlight for Missing-Link, though its mechanics remained unclear. Players were expected to explore global locations virtually, but the complexity of this feature may have sparked concerns during development.
Another Mobile Misstep?
Square Enix’s track record of canceling mobile titles has become a recurring theme. Despite critical praise for much of its catalog, the company’s dense portfolio often struggles to resonate globally.
While new mobile releases thrive in Japan, capturing an international audience remains challenging. This likely wasn’t an issue for Kingdom Hearts, suggesting development hurdles made the project’s core concept unsustainable, prompting a pivot to the mainline series.
