Rainn Wilson, known for his role in The Office, reflected on the challenge of continuing the hit comedy series after lead actor Steve Carell's departure two seasons before the show concluded.

Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute, shared with Variety that Carell's exit was anticipated by the cast, as the actor was already gaining traction in film roles. "We saw it coming for quite some time," Wilson noted.

Still, the series needed time to regain its momentum after Michael Scott, portrayed by Carell, left—a phase Wilson described as "somewhat chaotic" behind the scenes.

"After Steve left, things got a bit hectic," Wilson explained. "We were figuring out the show's new tone, who would take the lead, and how to tell stories without the comedic anchor of Michael Scott—one of America's finest comic actors. That adjustment was a real struggle."

Carell had already built a film career before The Office, with notable parts in Anchorman and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, both filmed before he took on the role of Dunder Mifflin's iconic regional manager.

However, The Office propelled Carell's stardom to new heights, similar to the career boosts it provided Wilson and co-star John Krasinski.

Following Carell's exit, the final seasons introduced new senior characters played by James Spader and Catherine Tate, culminating in a finale that wrapped up original storylines—including Dwight's wedding to longtime love Angela, which featured a brief, eagerly awaited cameo from Carell.

Next up for fans is the spinoff series The Paper, co-created by producer Greg Daniels and starring Domhnall Gleeson, set to premiere this September. It will employ the same mockumentary style, set in a struggling local newspaper office, and include The Office's Oscar in a recurring role.

Carell has already stated he won't appear in The Paper, noting there's "no real reason" for Michael Scott to be involved.
