Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube Controller Faces Compatibility Challenges

Nintendo has addressed concerns about the compatibility of its new GameCube controller, noting potential "challenges" when using it with modern Nintendo Switch 2 titles.

The GameCube controller was introduced during the 60-minute Nintendo Direct earlier this month. The fine print at the time indicated that the controller is "only compatible with Nintendo GameCube" titles in the Nintendo Switch Online retro library, excluding other Switch 2 games.

Nintendo has since elaborated on this disclaimer, emphasizing that the retro controller is primarily designed for GameCube titles. While players might use the GameCube controller for other Nintendo Switch 2 games, they could encounter "challenges" due to the controller lacking "all the buttons and features" of modern controllers.

Nintendo also reiterated that the GameCube controller is exclusively compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.

"The Nintendo GameCube controller is crafted for the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection and serves as an optional way to enjoy those titles," Nintendo stated to Nintendo Life.

"As it lacks some buttons and features found in other controllers compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2, there may be challenges when playing other games. The Nintendo GameCube controller is only usable on Nintendo Switch 2 and is not compatible with the original Nintendo Switch."

The GameCube collection significantly enhances the Nintendo Switch Online library, offering subscribers access to a robust lineup of classic 2000s titles, such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2, available at launch this summer. The library is set to grow in the coming years, with anticipated additions like Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and more.
