Take-Two Affirms Ongoing Support for Legacy Titles amid GTA 6 Speculation

The Future of GTA Online After GTA 6's Release: What We Know

The impending release of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) in Fall 2025 has left many GTA Online players wondering about the fate of their beloved online world. With GTA 6 expected to introduce a new and potentially improved GTA Online (perhaps even GTA Online 2), concerns are rising about the longevity of the current iteration and the potential loss of progress and investment.

GTA Online's remarkable success and profitability have arguably influenced Rockstar's decision to prioritize live service updates over story DLC for GTA 5. However, the question remains: will the existing GTA Online be abandoned once its successor arrives?

This question was posed to Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick. While he avoided specifics about any new GTA Online project, he offered insight by referencing the company's experience with NBA 2K Online. Both NBA 2K Online (launched in 2012) and its sequel, NBA 2K Online 2 (launched in 2017), coexisted successfully, demonstrating Take-Two's willingness to support legacy titles with active player bases.

Zelnick stated, "Generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles... We did not sunset Online 1. They both are still in the market and they serve consumers and they're alive and we have this massive audience. So we've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them."

This suggests that a potential GTA Online 2 might not replace the original. Continued player engagement in the current GTA Online could lead to its continued support alongside any new iteration.

However, much about GTA 6 remains unknown. With only a trailer and a release window confirmed, Rockstar needs to provide more information soon, especially considering the proximity of the potential release date to other highly anticipated titles like Borderlands 4. For now, the future of GTA Online remains uncertain, but Zelnick's comments offer a glimmer of hope for players invested in the current game.
