The WD Elements houses a single 14TB drive, so its physical size is standard for a desktop hard drive. It uses a fast USB 3.0 interface (5Gbps/625MBps), though real-world transfer speeds are typically between 100-200MBps due to its traditional HDD mechanics. The package includes a USB 3.0 cable and backup software. The drive is plug-and-play, automatically recognized by both Windows and macOS.

While SSDs are popular, traditional hard drives remain the better option for long-term, high-capacity storage. Hard drives are far more affordable—this model costs about $14.29 per TB, while an SSD starts at roughly $50 per TB. They also offer much higher maximum capacities; consumer SSDs typically max out at 8TB, half the storage of this 14TB drive. Crucially, although SSD longevity can match HDDs, recovering data from a failed hard drive is generally easier and more successful than from an SSD.
