Taiko Virtual
Taiko (Taiko) are a diverse range of Japanese percussion instruments. In Japanese, the term encompasses all types of drums, but outside Japan, it specifically refers to the various Japanese drums known as wadaiko (和太鼓, "Japanese drums") and the ensemble Taiko drumming style known as kumi-daiko (組太鼓, "set of drums"). The construction process of Taiko varies among manufacturers, and the preparation of both the drum body and skin can take several years depending on the method.
Taiko have a mythological origin in Japanese folklore, but historical records indicate that Taiko were introduced to Japan through Korean and Chinese cultural influence as early as the 6th century CE. Some Taiko resemble instruments originating from India. Archaeological evidence also supports the presence of Taiko in Japan during the 6th century Kofun period. Their function has evolved throughout history, serving purposes such as communication, military action, theatrical accompaniment, religious ceremonies, and festival and concert performances. In modern times, Taiko have also played a significant role in social movements for minorities both within and outside Japan.
Kumi-daiko performance, characterized by an ensemble playing on different drums, was developed in 1951 by Daihachi Oguchi and has continued with groups like Kodo. Other performance styles, such as hachijō-daiko, have also emerged from specific communities in Japan. Kumi-daiko performance groups are active not only in Japan but also in the United States, Australia, Canada, Europe, Taiwan, and Brazil. Taiko performance encompasses various elements, including technical rhythm, form, stick grip, clothing, and specific instrumentation. Ensembles typically utilize different types of barrel-shaped nagadō-daiko as well as smaller shime-daiko. Many groups incorporate vocals, strings, and woodwind instruments to accompany the drums.
