Among the rich tapestry of traditional Minangkabau arts, tambua tansa and talempong pacik stand out as vibrant expressions of culture that continue to thrive. Other notable traditional arts include piriang dance, piriang dance on broken glass, randai, saluang, rice stem pupuik, and the art of sprouts. These forms of art are not just performances but are deeply integrated into the social fabric of the community.
Tambua tansa, in particular, is a familiar presence at various community gatherings. Its lively rhythms and beats are a staple at people's parties and even grace official government events, adding a touch of cultural flair to these occasions.
Predominantly developed throughout the nagari in Agam Regency, tambua tansa has seen the most rapid growth in the Lake Maninjau interlocking area and Lubuk Basung District. The instrument itself, known as tansa, is a small-sized tambua struck with two special rattan blades. It serves as the command for tambua musicians, with the dancer leading the group and determining the type of song or rhythm to be played.
Tambua, on the other hand, is crafted from specific perforated wood staples and comes in varying sizes. The larger ones, with diameters of around 50 to 60 cm, are called Tambadang Gadang, while those with diameters of 25 to 30 cm are known as Tambua Kaciak (small drum). A typical tambua group consists of 6 to 12 instruments.
The tambua tansa serves a crucial social function, often used to rally community members for collective efforts such as gorongroyong road construction or the building of other public facilities. The group leader or the nagari leader typically performs tambua tansa at the site of mutual assistance in the morning, its thundering sound calling workers to quickly gather at the location.
Once the communal work begins, tambua tansa continues to play an essential role, boosting morale with its lively rhythm. Accompanied by the sound of pupuik rice stems and the cheers of the workers, it helps to alleviate the feeling of fatigue and the heat of the blazing sun.
In the context of marriage celebrations, tambua tansa is indispensable, injecting life and excitement into the festivities. Without its vibrant sound, the atmosphere would be noticeably lackluster.
Additionally, tambua tansa is employed to honor and welcome distinguished guests. During official visits to the nagari, such as those by the regent, deputy regent, police chief, governor, camat, and other dignitaries, tambua tansa's resounding beats set a welcoming tone.
