Tichu is an exciting multi-genre card game that blends elements of Bridge, Daihinmin, and Poker. It's designed for four players, divided into two teams, with partners sitting opposite each other. The objective is for teams to collaborate and outscore their opponents, aiming to reach a predetermined number of points first.
The Tichu deck comprises 56 cards divided into four suits: Jade, Swords, Pagodas, and Stars. Each suit contains cards ranging from 2 to 10, followed by Jack, Queen, King, and Ace. Additionally, the deck includes four unique special cards: the Dragon, the Phoenix, the Hound, and the Mah Jong.
At the start of the game, each player receives eight cards and has the opportunity to call "Grand Tichu," a high-stakes 200-point bet that the caller will be the first to discard all their cards. After deciding on the Grand Tichu call, six more cards are dealt, bringing each player's total to 14. At this point, players can no longer declare Grand Tichu, but they can call "Tichu" before playing their first card, betting 100 points on being the first to go out. The key differences between Grand Tichu and Tichu lie in the timing of the call, the number of cards seen, and the points at stake.
Once all cards are distributed, the game moves into the card exchange phase. Each player must pass one card face down to every other player, resulting in a total of three cards passed and received by each player.
The player holding the Mah Jong card initiates the first trick, playing any valid card combination. Subsequent players can either pass or play a higher-value combination of the same type. Single cards can only be beaten by higher single cards, sequences by higher sequences of the same length, and full houses by higher full houses. "Bombs" are an exception and can be played at any time to trump other combinations. When all other players pass, the player who played the highest combination wins the trick and leads the next one. The round concludes when both players of a team have gone out, meaning they've played all their cards. If one player remains with cards, they face a penalty, handing their remaining cards to the opponents and their won tricks to the first player to go out.
The game continues until one team reaches or surpasses the agreed-upon total points, marking the end of the match.
