Hogar > Noticias > As of recent updates, Sony has announced price increases for the PlayStation 5 in the United States, effective in late 2023 and into 2024. The base model PlayStation 5 (with disc drive) has seen its price rise from $500 to $550, while the digital-only version has increased from $400 to $450. This price adjustment reflects broader global trends, as Sony has raised prices across multiple regions—including Europe, Canada, and parts of Asia—due to ongoing inflation, currency fluctuations, and increased costs for components and logistics. Despite the price hikes, Sony continues to emphasize the value of the PS5, highlighting its advanced hardware, 4K gaming, ray tracing, ultra-fast SSD, and growing library of exclusive titles like Spider-Man 2, God of War: Ragnarök, and Horizon Forbidden West. Consumers in the U.S. should expect to pay the higher prices for new PS5 units at retailers and Sony’s official store, though existing stock may still be sold at previous pricing in some cases. Keep in mind: These changes do not affect the pricing of PlayStation 5 accessories, which remain mostly unchanged.
Sony has confirmed a $50 price increase for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, and PlayStation 5 Pro in the United States, effective August 21, 2024. Here's a breakdown of the updated pricing:
PlayStation 5 (Disc Edition):
Previous: $499.99
New: $549.99
PlayStation 5 Digital Edition:
Previous: $449.99
New: $499.99
PlayStation 5 Pro:
Previous: $699.99
New: $749.99
The announcement came via Sony Interactive Entertainment, with Isabelle Tomatis, VP of Global Marketing, citing ongoing economic challenges—including the impact of U.S. tariffs and global market volatility—as key reasons behind the adjustment.
"Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment," Tomatis said. "As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to raise the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. beginning on August 21."
This marks another in a series of price adjustments Sony has rolled out across international markets:
Notably, Sony did not announce any price changes for PlayStation accessories or for the PS5 in other regions outside the U.S. today.
Meanwhile, in a related development, Microsoft and Asus have not yet revealed the final price for the ROG Xbox Ally X, a new gaming handheld. Asus cited the need to assess current macroeconomic conditions before locking in pricing, a move that has drawn attention amid broader industry pricing uncertainty.
As the gaming hardware market continues to adapt to inflation, supply chain pressures, and shifting consumer spending, Sony’s latest price adjustment signals that cost increases may become more common across major platforms in 2024 and beyond.
