My First Adult LEGO Purchase Was This Mario Set and I Have No Regrets

As someone who prides themselves on being practical with money, my spending habits usually revolve around essentials. I occasionally indulge in video games when they're on sale, but it's rare for me to splurge on something as seemingly frivolous as a LEGO set. Growing up, I was an avid LEGO builder, but as I matured, I drifted away from this hobby—partly because of the high cost associated with these kits. For instance, while there are affordable options under $25, sets linked to popular franchises like movies or video games often carry a heftier price tag.

It was only last year that I finally caved and purchased the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant. This set, which had been discounted to under $50 since October of the previous year, caught my eye as a quirky addition to my desk. I had been contemplating this purchase ever since reading IGN's review of the build. As a long-time fan of Mario games, this set seemed like the perfect homage to the franchise. While LEGO's botanical line offers beautiful floral sets, none of them capture the whimsical and slightly menacing charm of the Piranha Plant.

After assembling the Piranha Plant, I'm thrilled to have it as a desk companion. Each glance at it transports me to the Mushroom Kingdom, where I'm tending to my own little plant during work hours. Not only is the final product delightful, but the process of building it was equally enjoyable. It took me an afternoon to complete, yet it was engaging enough to keep my attention throughout. This is currently my only LEGO Nintendo set, but the experience has definitely piqued my interest in collecting more.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on a LEGO Set You Love?

As I mentioned earlier, LEGO sets can be quite pricey, especially those aimed at adults, with some reaching $200 or more. It's easy to get carried away with these tempting creations, but it's crucial to balance indulgence with financial responsibility. The Mario LEGO set, being under $50, felt like a justifiable treat. The hours spent building it and the daily joy it brings me are priceless. While I believe that happiness is worth more than $50, that's the limit I've set for myself on such purchases.
