Expanding Beyond Night City

The sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, currently known as Project Orion, plans to broaden the game world with additional locations. At Digital Dragons 2025 on May 20, Mike Pondsmith, founder of R. Talorian Games and original game designer, shared insights into the project's development.

Though less involved than he was with the first game, Pondsmith maintains oversight of the sequel's progress. "I review the scripts regularly," he noted. "Just last week I was exploring various departments, seeing innovations like new Cyberware prototypes and providing feedback."

He confirmed developers are crafting a secondary urban environment alongside Night City. "When I saw the concept," Pondsmith explained, "it captured exactly the grim aesthetic they envisioned—not reminiscent of Blade Runner, but rather a terrifying version of Chicago. I immediately recognized its potential."

CD Projekt Red has been actively recruiting talent for Cyberpunk 2 this year, including a Lead Encounter Designer position. This role focuses on crafting "immersive gameplay moments that will captivate players."

Most notably, the team aims to revolutionize gaming technology through this project. Key responsibilities include collaborating on "the most advanced and responsive crowd system ever implemented in a video game."

While details remain scarce, Pondsmith's revelations and CDPR's hiring efforts suggest Cyberpunk 2 will significantly expand upon its predecessor's rich world-building and narrative depth.

CD Projekt Red recently showcased Cyberpunk 2077 running on Nintendo's upcoming handheld system. Their official website features approximately 37 minutes of gameplay footage demonstrating optimization efforts.

Early impressions from Switch 2 showcase events in New York and Paris indicated performance challenges, particularly regarding frame rate stability. Journalists reported noticeable frame drops, with one noting "While impressive technically, the Switch 2 version isn't the optimal way to experience Cyberpunk's dense urban environments."

Nevertheless, CDPR engineer Tim Green expressed satisfaction with the port's progress in an April 25 interview. "The Switch 2's hardware specifications have eliminated many technical constraints we faced originally," he stated. "This freed our team to enhance other aspects, and we're pleased with the current results."

The Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition launches June 5, 2025 for Switch 2, bundling the base game, all updates, and the Phantom Liberty expansion. For continuous updates on both the sequel and Switch port, stay tuned to our coverage.
