Donkey Kong Country Returns HD: Retro Studios Snubbed in Credits

The upcoming release of Donkey Kong Country Returns HD on January 16, 2025, has sparked controversy due to the exclusion of Retro Studios, the original developers of the 2010 Wii title, from the game's credits. Instead of a full list of the original team, the credits only acknowledge Forever Entertainment, the porting and enhancement studio, and a generic statement crediting "the original development staff." This omission has fueled ongoing criticism of Nintendo's crediting practices in remastered games.

Nintendo's Switch console has become a popular platform for retro game releases, with many remasters and remakes of classic titles. This includes several enhanced versions of beloved franchises such as Super Mario RPG and Advance Wars, as well as lesser-known titles like the Famicom Detective Club games. The Donkey Kong Country series is another example, but the handling of Donkey Kong Country Returns HD credits has drawn significant backlash. Nintendo Life reported on this omission, highlighting the lack of recognition for Retro Studios' contributions.

This isn't an isolated incident. In 2023, Zoid Kirsch, a former Retro Studios programmer who worked on the original Metroid Prime games, publicly criticized Nintendo for a similar omission in Metroid Prime Remastered. He expressed disappointment at the exclusion of former Retro Studios employees. Other developers have echoed these sentiments, labeling the practice of excluding original development teams from remaster credits as "bad practice."

The issue of game credits is increasingly important in the industry. Proper crediting is crucial for developers' career progression and serves as a vital acknowledgment of their hard work. Omitting original developers from remasters is seen as a lack of appreciation for their significant contributions to beloved games. Furthermore, accusations against Nintendo extend beyond developer credits to include alleged failures to properly credit translators, often under restrictive NDAs preventing public acknowledgment of their work on major franchises like The Legend of Zelda.

As public awareness of these crediting practices grows, and more developers and fans voice their concerns, pressure is mounting on publishers, including Nintendo, to reform their policies and ensure proper recognition for all contributors to their games.
