Dynasty Warriors: Origins reintroduces thrilling duels, a gameplay mechanic initially seen in Dynasty Warriors 4. This guide explains how these intense one-on-one encounters work.
Understanding Duels in Dynasty Warriors: Origins
Duels unlock in Chapter 2, allowing you to challenge high-ranking enemy officers. A prompt appears briefly when an officer is duel-eligible; press R1 and L1 simultaneously to initiate the challenge.
The duel takes place in a small arena surrounded by soldiers. A progress bar at the top of the screen tracks your and your opponent's success. Each successful hit advances your bar; conversely, your opponent's hits advance theirs. The goal is to completely fill your bar by landing enough blows.
Your starting position in the duel is determined by your morale, not health. A winning streak gives you an advantage, while losing puts you behind. A stalemate results in an even starting point. Strategic dodging, parrying, and maintaining distance (especially against opponents using Battle Arts) are crucial for victory, as duels have a time limit.
Consequences of Victory and Defeat
A successful duel inflicts massive damage on your opponent and significantly boosts your morale. Conversely, losing a duel results in substantial damage to you and a significant morale drop for your army—potentially disastrous late in a battle. However, inconclusive duels have no penalties for either side. Note that certain unavoidable duels exist; losing these automatically fails the mission, while winning guarantees victory. Carefully assess your opponent before initiating a duel, as a loss can have severe consequences.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins is available now on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
