Pocketpair, the developer behind the immensely popular game Palworld, is gearing up for a significant crossplay update set to launch in late March 2025. In an announcement shared on X/Twitter, the studio confirmed that this update will enable multiplayer functionality across all platforms and introduce a new feature called world transfer for Pals. Accompanying the announcement was a promotional image showcasing various Palworld characters engaged in battle with a formidable Pal.
John 'Bucky' Buckley, Pocketpair's Communications Director and Publishing Manager, hinted at "a few little surprises" that will be part of the March update, adding an extra layer of anticipation for fans. This news is particularly exciting for the 32 million players who have embraced Palworld since its early access debut in January 2024. The game's 2025 content roadmap promises an extensive lineup, including the much-anticipated crossplay feature, an "ending scenario," and additional new content for the creature-catching survival game.
Palworld made a splash upon its release on Steam for $30 and simultaneously on Game Pass for Xbox and PC, shattering sales records and achieving unprecedented concurrent player numbers. The overwhelming success led Pocketpair's CEO, Takuro Mizobe, to admit that the studio was initially overwhelmed by the massive profits generated by the game. Responding quickly to capitalize on this success, Pocketpair signed a deal with Sony to establish Palworld Entertainment, a new venture focused on expanding the Palworld IP and bringing the game to the PS5.
However, the road ahead is not without its challenges. Pocketpair faces a lawsuit from Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, who allege that Palworld has infringed on "multiple" patent rights. The companies are seeking an injunction against infringement and compensation for damages. In response, Pocketpair has identified the specific patents in question and made adjustments to the game, notably how players summon Pals. The studio remains defiant, committing to defend its position in court, stating, “We will continue to assert our position in this case through future legal proceedings.”
