Assassin's Creed Shadows (AC Shadows) has been rated CERO Z by Japan's Computer Entertainment Rating Organization (CERO), resulting in significant content adjustments for its Japanese release. This rating, reserved for content suitable only for audiences aged 18 and above, has necessitated the removal of dismemberment and decapitation scenes from the game, alongside alterations to depictions of wounds and severed body parts. These changes ensure compliance with CERO's strict guidelines on violence, sex, anti-social acts, and language and ideology expression.

Ubisoft Japan shared this news via Twitter (X), highlighting that while the overseas versions of AC Shadows will feature an option to toggle dismemberment and decapitation, the Japanese version will not include these elements at all. Additionally, there will be some unspecified modifications to the Japanese audio in the game's international release.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ Japanese Version Removes Dismemberment And Decapitation

Japan's stringent content regulations have a history of impacting video game releases. Assassin's Creed titles, known for their violent themes, have often received CERO Z ratings. Previous entries like AC Valhalla and AC Origins faced similar scrutiny. The challenge of meeting CERO's standards has led some developers, like those behind The Callisto Protocol and Dead Space Remake, to forego releasing their games in Japan altogether, citing that the required changes would compromise the intended player experience.

The CERO Z rating underscores the organization's ongoing concerns over gore and dismemberment in video games. This rating restricts the sale and distribution of AC Shadows to those under 18, aligning with CERO's commitment to protecting younger audiences from excessive violence.

Changes In Yasuke's Description In Game Store Pages

Assassin's Creed Shadows Gets Censored in Japan

Further adjustments have been made to the description of Yasuke, one of AC Shadows' protagonists, in the game's Japanese language listings on Steam and the PlayStation Store. Originally labeled as a samurai, Yasuke is now referred to as "Ikki tousen," translating to "a warrior who can face a thousand enemies." This change follows Ubisoft's response to backlash regarding Yasuke's historical depiction as "the black samurai," a sensitive topic in Japanese culture. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has emphasized the company's commitment to creating entertainment for a broad audience, without pushing specific agendas, despite the use of historical figures in their narratives.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is slated for release on March 20, 2025, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. For more detailed information, visit our dedicated Assassin’s Creed Shadows page.
