Stray Kite Studios Unveils "Wartorn," a Real-Time Strategy Roguelite

Stray Kite Studios, a Dallas-based developer boasting veterans from renowned studios like BioShock, Borderlands, and Age of Empires, has announced its first original title: Wartorn. This real-time strategy roguelite, slated for Steam and Epic Games Store early access launch in Spring 2025, promises a unique blend of tactical combat and compelling narrative choices.

Wartorn casts players into a fractured fantasy world, following the journey of two elven sisters striving for family reunification. Their quest is fraught with peril, demanding strategic prowess in challenging battles and forcing players to confront morally ambiguous dilemmas.

Dynamic Destruction and Strategic Depth

The game's defining feature is its physics-based environmental destruction. Unscripted and unpredictable, this element ensures replayability, transforming each encounter into a unique challenge. The narrative emphasizes the search for purpose amidst chaos, exploring themes of sacrifice, survival, and the strength of familial bonds. Co-founder and Creative Director Paul Hellquist states, "We’ve poured our hearts into creating a game that not only entertains but also makes players think deeply about sacrifice, survival, and the bonds that unite us."

Tough Choices and Flexible Combat

Beyond combat, players face difficult decisions impacting the narrative and subsequent playthroughs. Choices like rationing resources or prioritizing rescues add another layer of strategic depth. Combat itself is equally dynamic, featuring a flexible magic system allowing players to creatively combine elemental forces (fire, water, lightning) for diverse tactical advantages. Spells interact uniquely, offering situational applications like electrifying waterlogged enemies or igniting tar-covered foes.

Progression and Accessibility

Wartorn's roguelite mechanics incorporate persistent upgrades between runs, easing subsequent attempts. The game boasts a painterly aesthetic, enhancing the dramatic atmosphere. For maximum accessibility, the game includes a slow-motion feature, enabling precise command input amidst the chaos.

The early access launch on Steam and the Epic Games Store is set for Spring 2025. Wartorn promises a captivating experience blending strategic gameplay, narrative depth, and replayability within a visually stunning world.
