As a devoted fan of thatgamecompany's Sky: Children of the Light, I'm thrilled about the game's unique art style, presentation, and storyline. The excitement has reached new heights with the announcement of Sky's first-ever in-game animated feature, The Two Embers. This ambitious project marks a significant milestone for thatgamecompany, showcasing their dedication to immersive storytelling.
The Two Embers is set to premiere in a limited in-game screening starting July 21st. This silent animated feature will delve into the origin story of Sky, presenting the tale in two parts. Part One will captivate audiences with the journeys of two children, separated by time yet deeply connected. The narrative begins with a young orphan living on the fringes of The Ruler's City, a once-thriving metropolis now in decline.
The story unfolds as the child discovers a wounded baby manatee, leading to an exploration of themes such as grief, loneliness, and the power of small acts of kindness. High above, The Ruler observes the kingdom's decay as a dark storm looms on the horizon. Without dialogue or voiceovers, the film relies solely on its visuals, music, and emotional depth to convey the child's journey through grief, with the manatee symbolizing a beacon of hope.
Sky: Children of the Light has released the first look at The Two Embers: Part One, which you can watch below:
Each week, a new chapter of the film will be unlocked within Sky Cinema, an in-game theater designed specifically for this experience. Alongside the film, new in-game content related to each chapter will be available, allowing players to explore the story further through interactive gameplay.
The decision to release The Two Embers within the game itself is a groundbreaking move by thatgamecompany. Rather than opting for a standalone film or a streaming platform, this approach enhances the immersive nature of Sky, transforming it into more than just a game. With Aurora's concert and now a full-fledged animated feature, thatgamecompany continues to push boundaries in transmedia storytelling.
The Two Embers is produced by Light & Realm in collaboration with thatgamecompany, and co-produced by Illusorium Studios and Orchid. This project represents the most ambitious endeavor yet for thatgamecompany. If you haven't yet, be sure to check out Sky on the Google Play Store.
