Final Fantasy Creator Can't Stop, Won't Stop; Hopes to Create FF6's Spiritual Successor

Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, is back in the game development scene, despite previous retirement plans. His latest endeavor aims to create a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy VI.

A New Chapter After Fantasian

Following the success of Fantasian Neo Dimension, initially released in 2021, Sakaguchi revealed his desire to craft another title. In an interview with The Verge, he shared that Fantasian was intended as his final project. However, the positive experience working with his team has inspired him to embark on a new journey. This new game, he hopes, will serve as a fitting successor to Final Fantasy VI.

The team, responsible for Fantasian, aims to create a game that blends classic elements with innovative features. Sakaguchi describes this project as "part two of my farewell note," hinting at a final bow to his illustrious career.

Development Update and Speculation

In a 2024 Famitsu interview, Sakaguchi confirmed the project's progress, stating that he anticipates completion within two years. A trademark filing for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" by Mistwalker in June 2024 fueled speculation of a Fantasian sequel, although this remains unconfirmed.

The new project will likely adhere to Sakaguchi's established style, focusing on fantasy RPG elements. However, concrete details regarding the title and other aspects remain undisclosed.

Reunion with Square Enix

The collaboration between Mistwalker and Square Enix for the multi-platform release of FANTASIAN Neo Dimension in December 2024 marked a significant event. Sakaguchi reflected on this partnership, highlighting the full-circle experience of working with the company where his career began.

Despite this collaboration, Sakaguchi clarified his intention to move forward without revisiting the Final Fantasy franchise or past projects, preferring to focus on his role as a gamer rather than a developer within that specific realm.
