Mario Kart 8's high-octane 200cc challenge hasn’t made it into the Switch 2’s launch title, Mario Kart World — but Nintendo has suggested it might return through a future update.
Nintendo first introduced the 200cc mode in Mario Kart 8, though it arrived only after the game’s initial release. Could the same strategy apply to its sequel? The signs point to yes.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Mario Kart World producer Kosuke Yabuki noted that the high-difficulty mode has been widely embraced by fans — but declined to confirm whether it’ll return in this installment, at least for now.
"Many players really enjoy the added intensity of these advanced modes," Kosuke remarked. "But does that mean we’ll be introducing engine sizes beyond 150cc in Mario Kart World? I’m afraid I can’t answer that just yet."It’s no surprise that 200cc isn’t available at launch. Delaying its release gives players time to master the tracks and adapt to the standard 150cc speed — or even slower, if preferred — before tackling the more demanding 200cc experience.
This approach makes even more sense given Mario Kart World’s multiplayer-focused design, where players are encouraged to team up, explore together, keep GameChat active, and share their screens.

When the 200cc update eventually drops, all players will likely need to be on the same speed tier to explore the game’s open world together. That’s why it’s smarter, once again, to let everyone build their skills on 150cc before stepping up to a higher gear — or engine size.
Mario Kart World launches this week alongside the Nintendo Switch 2, featuring a seamless, explorable map. But don’t expect it to feel like Forza Horizon, IGN has warned. And in other key Mario Kart news, IGN asked Nintendo whether the game’s beloved Cow character is actually eating beef.
