Warner Bros. Games has unveiled Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition, touted as the most comprehensive version of the intense fighting game. However, the release has raised alarms among fans, who fear NetherRealm has shifted focus away from the title, potentially halting new DLC characters or major updates.

Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition bundles the core game with previously released content, including the Khaos Reigns story expansion, Kombat Pack 1, and Kombat Pack 2.

It also introduces new character skins for Johnny Cage, Kitana, Scorpion, and Shao Khan, inspired by the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 film, a Sub-Zero skin based on the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie, and a tournament-themed outfit for Liu Kang.

For fans, the Definitive Edition signals the end of Mortal Kombat 1’s development cycle. While Warner Bros. frequently releases definitive editions, and NetherRealm games often receive them, this launch feels conclusive. With no news of a Kombat Pack 3 or other significant updates, fans suspect the T-1000 guest character, set for release in March 2025, may mark the game’s final addition.

If accurate, this is a major letdown for dedicated Mortal Kombat 1 players who expected extended support. Many cite a September 2024 tweet from NetherRealm’s Ed Boon, who reassured fans that the studio remained committed to supporting Mortal Kombat 1 for years to come.

“They’re done with the game. It’s their way of saying, ‘See you in a year or two for another pricey title loaded with guest fighters!’” a frustrated redditor commented.

“MK1’s content lifespan is shorter than the Texas Chainsaw Massacre game, which is wild,” another added.

NRS promises multi-year support, but it ends after two years. Every time.

For context, in July 2021, NetherRealm announced it had begun work on Mortal Kombat 1, confirming no further DLC for Mortal Kombat 11, which launched two years and three months earlier. No such announcement has been made for Mortal Kombat 1 yet.

The game saw a brief revival in January with the secret Floyd fight, a pink ninja teased by Ed Boon for years, sparking a community-driven surge of excitement. However, this was a rare highlight in what many core fans consider a lackluster release.

The T-1000 Terminator, part of the Khaos Reigns expansion, was the final DLC character, following Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. Fans have long speculated about a potential Kombat Pack 3, amid doubts about Mortal Kombat 1’s commercial success.

Warner Bros. Discovery, however, remains confident in the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav stated that the company plans to focus on just four titles, including Mortal Kombat.

Many expect NetherRealm’s next project to be a third Injustice game, though neither Warner Bros. nor NetherRealm has confirmed this. The first Injustice title, Injustice: Gods Among Us, launched in 2013, followed by Injustice 2 in 2017. After Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019, many anticipated an Injustice release, but NetherRealm opted for the Mortal Kombat 1 soft reboot in 2023.

In a June 2023 IGN interview, Ed Boon vaguely addressed this choice: “Several factors played a role, some I can discuss, others I shouldn’t.”

Boon highlighted two reasons: the COVID-19 pandemic and the shift to a newer Unreal Engine version (Mortal Kombat 11 used Unreal Engine 3, while Mortal Kombat 1 runs on Unreal Engine 4).

“We moved to a new graphics engine, Unreal,” Boon explained. “We also prioritized safety during COVID. With all those variables, we decided, ‘Let’s make another Mortal Kombat game and hopefully return to Injustice later.’”

When asked directly, Boon confirmed the Injustice franchise remains active.

“Absolutely not closed off,” he said.
