Monster Hunter Wilds: Unveiling the Oilwell Basin and its Fiery Inhabitants

An exclusive interview with Monster Hunter Wilds directors Yuya Tokuda and Kaname Fujioka sheds light on a new location and formidable monsters. Prepare to explore the Oilwell Basin and face its fearsome ruler, the Nu Udra.
The Oilwell Basin distinguishes itself from previous locales with its unique vertical structure. Unlike the horizontally expansive Windward Plains and Scarlet Forest, the Basin presents a layered environment, growing increasingly volcanic and magma-filled at deeper levels. The upper areas feature oil-slick swamps, transitioning to a more underwater volcano ecosystem at the lower depths, a design inspired by Monster Hunter World's Coral Highlands. The Basin's appearance shifts dramatically depending on the in-game event, "The Plenty," transforming from a smoky, volcanic landscape to a clearer, marine-like environment. This transformation is reflected in the unique flora and fauna found at each level.

The Oilwell Basin's apex predator, the Nu Udra, is a colossal, octopus-like creature with a flammable, slimy body. Its numerous tentacles are used to ensnare prey before unleashing devastating fire attacks. Complementing the Windward Plains' Rey Dau (lightning) and the Scarlet Forest's Uth Duna (water), the Nu Udra completes a trio of elemental rulers with its mastery of fire. The design was inspired by a desire to incorporate a tentacled monster, modifying a typically aquatic creature for a more striking, demonic appearance. This aesthetic is further enhanced by its unique battle theme, incorporating musical elements reminiscent of black magic. The Nu Udra presents a significant challenge, utilizing both single-target and area-of-effect attacks, and is immune to Flash Bombs.

The Oilwell Basin is teeming with other formidable monsters. The Ajarakan, a massive, flame-covered ape-like creature, employs martial arts-inspired combat. The Rompopolo, a bizarre, spiky, globular monster, utilizes toxic gases in battle, its design inspired by the stereotypical mad scientist. Interestingly, its drops yield surprisingly "cute" equipment. Finally, Gravio, a returning monster from Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, fits seamlessly into the volcanic environment of the Oilwell Basin.

With these exciting reveals, anticipation builds for the February 28th release of Monster Hunter Wilds.
