Palworld developer Pocketpair acknowledges that recent game updates resulted from necessary adjustments triggered by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company's ongoing patent litigation.

Initially released on Steam for $30 alongside Xbox Game Pass in early 2024, Palworld shattered sales records and player counts. Studio head Takuro Mizobe revealed the team struggled to manage the unprecedented profits, yet seized opportunities by partnering with Sony to establish Palworld Entertainment for franchise expansion, followed by a PS5 launch.

Post-launch scrutiny intensified when critics accused Palworld of mimicking Pokémon designs. Instead of copyright claims, Nintendo pursued patent infringement charges, demanding ¥5 million (≈$32,846) per violation plus damages, alongside seeking sales injunctions.

In November, Pocketpair verified the contested Japanese patents concerning virtual creature capture mechanics. Palworld's similar system—using Pal Spheres to catch monsters—mirrored mechanics from Nintendo's Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

Six months later, Pocketpair disclosed that November 2024's v0.3.11 patch modified core gameplay mechanics due to legal pressure, replacing thrown Pal Sphere summons with static spawns. The studio warned that resisting changes would've severely compromised player experience.

The adjustments continue with v0.5.5, transitioning gliding mechanics from Pals to inventory-based gliders while retaining companion bonuses. Pocketpair framed these as unavoidable concessions to prevent potential sales bans.

"We share our community's disappointment," the statement read, "but believe these measures are essential to safeguard Palworld's future development."

The studio maintains its legal challenge against the patents' validity while continuing development. Their full statement emphasized gratitude toward fans enduring the confidential litigation process.

We sincerely thank our dedicated community for their unwavering support during these challenging months. While we wish we could share more details, legal constraints prevent full transparency.
The ongoing patent dispute requires difficult compromises to protect Palworld's availability. November's v0.3.11 update fundamentally altered summoning mechanics—a direct consequence of litigation that disappointed both players and our team.
With v0.5.5, we're implementing additional changes to gliding systems while preserving companion bonuses. These protective measures, though disruptive, prevent greater potential harm to the player experience.
We deeply regret any concern this situation causes and remain committed to delivering exceptional Palworld content.

At March's GDC, Pocketpair's communications director John "Bucky" Buckley discussed post-launch challenges—including disproven AI accusations and retracted Pokémon model claims—during his talk "Surviving Palworld's Roller Coaster." He revealed Nintendo's lawsuit caught the studio completely off guard, describing it as an unforeseen development.
