FromSoftware has unveiled additional details about its newly announced exclusive for the Nintendo Switch 2, titled The Duskbloods. This collaboration with Nintendo has not only influenced the game's style but also transformed the design of the hub area's keeper into something unique and, intriguingly, cute.
During the Switch 2 Direct, the trailer concluded with a captivating image of a winged rat adorned with glowing glyphs, staring directly at the camera. This character, as it turns out, serves as the new hub companion for The Duskbloods.
Director Hidetaka Miyazaki, in an interview with Nintendo, elaborated on the character's role, stating, "That character shares a similar role with the fire keepers from the Dark Souls series. They remain in the hub area, providing the player with advice and guidance." He further explained the influence of the partnership, saying, "I suppose you could say we tried doing something a little Nintendo-esque in the spirit of the partnership."
When pressed on what he meant by "Nintendo-esque," Miyazaki added with a chuckle, "We tried something cute for a change. Although I will say this character is actually an elderly gentleman (laughter)."
FromSoftware's shrine keepers, such as Melina, the Maiden in Black, and the Doll, have always been pivotal in guiding players through their challenging worlds. With The Duskbloods being a PvPvE game, it will be fascinating to see the type of advice and guidance this winged rat will provide. Miyazaki mentioned that the team at FromSoft is experimenting with "a lot of new and interesting ideas," hinting at unexpected elements when The Duskbloods launches on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
