James Bond audition tapes from 2005 have surfaced online, offering fans a glimpse into Henry Cavill's portrayal of the iconic spy before he was ultimately outshone by Daniel Craig for the role. According to Games Radar, these intriguing clips were shared on the Ron South YouTube channel, run by an enthusiastic filmmaker with 1,890 subscribers. The channel also featured auditions from other notable actors such as Sam Worthington, Rupert Friend, and Anthony Starr.
However, it's Henry Cavill's auditions that have captured the most interest over the years. Many in the industry, including Casino Royale director Martin Campbell, felt that Cavill would have been an exceptional James Bond. Campbell himself described Cavill's audition as "tremendous" and reportedly favored him for the role. Despite this support, the final decision favored Daniel Craig, leaving Cavill to continue his career in other high-profile projects.
Cavill did get a chance to embrace the espionage genre in the film Argylle, where he starred alongside a remarkable cast including Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, and Catherine O'Hara. Unfortunately, despite the impressive lineup, the movie received a lukewarm response, earning a modest 4/10 from IGN.
Nevertheless, Cavill's career remains diverse and successful. He has portrayed iconic characters such as Superman in the DC Universe, Geralt of Rivia in Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher, and many other roles that showcase his versatility as an actor.
