If you’re a fan of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, you’ve likely been wondering which Bethesda classic will receive the same treatment next. While speculation swirls around a potential Fallout 3 remaster following its leak in 2023, many are curious about how Bethesda might enhance its 2008 post-apocalyptic RPG.

Bruce Nesmith, one of the original Fallout 3 designers, highlighted the game’s “not-so-good” gun combat, suggesting that this aspect would see significant improvements in a remastered version. Speaking with VideoGamer, Nesmith noted that Fallout 4 introduced substantial upgrades to the shooting mechanics, which were new territory for Bethesda.

“What did you see in Fallout 4?” Nesmith asked. “That will give you an idea of what they deemed necessary to refine from Fallout 3.”

He praised the advancements made in Fallout 4, particularly in gun combat, stating, “I know in Fallout 4 there was a lot of work done on the gun combat because Fallout 3 was the first time they tried a shooter-style game. And, well, I think the work that was done was amazing.”

Developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, Oblivion Remastered boasts a lengthy list of improvements, from visuals to features. Running smoothly at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, the remaster goes beyond aesthetics. Leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus have seen enhancements. New dialogue, a proper third-person view, and advanced lip-sync technology add depth to the experience. Fans have responded positively, with some even labeling it a “remake” rather than a remaster. Despite this, Bethesda clarified their decision to pursue the remaster route.

Nesmith suggested that Fallout 3 Remastered would likely incorporate similar updates to Oblivion Remastered. He acknowledged that Fallout 3’s combat didn’t compare favorably to other shooters at the time, adding, “It’s an RPG shooter, not a run-and-gun shooter. But a lot of work was done on that for Fallout 4. So I anticipate seeing a lot of that work go into it, assuming they’re doing the same.”

He further noted, “Oblivion wasn’t just brought up to the 2011 version of Skyrim; it was elevated to something that, at least on the surface, rivals the most recent graphics update in Skyrim. Many consider Oblivion Remastered so impressive that it could be called ‘Oblivion 2.0.’”

Bethesda is currently juggling multiple projects, including The Elder Scrolls VI, possible expansions for Starfield, remasters, and ongoing work on Fallout 76. Additionally, the Fallout TV series is set to explore New Vegas in its second season, keeping fans excited.
