When you think of the "Souls" series, the first name that likely comes to mind is Hidetaka Miyazaki, the visionary director behind Dark Souls, Sekiro, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring. However, Nightreign marks a significant milestone: it's the first title in this lineage where the director's role has been handed to someone else—Junya Ishizaki. During my visit to FromSoftware's offices in Japan, I had the opportunity to sit down with Ishizaki-san to discuss his experience stepping into the director's chair, explore the unique design choices that define Nightreign, and learn more about the origins of this Elden Ring spin-off.

In a previous interview, you mentioned that you presented the initial concept for Nightreign to Miyazaki-san, who approved it. How closely did the final game align with your original pitch? Did the vision evolve significantly during development?

Junya Ishizaki - Director of Elden Ring: Nightreign: The core concept remained largely unchanged from our original proposal to Miyazaki. However, throughout the development process, we incorporated extensive feedback and innovative ideas from the team. This collaborative input allowed us to expand upon the initial vision in exciting ways we hadn't initially anticipated.

Regarding advice from Miyazaki—and other directors at FromSoftware—the most impactful guidance was the importance of a director not holding back.

Let's discuss some of that feedback. You conducted a Closed Network Test. How did the data and player responses from that test influence Nightreign's development?

Game balance was a primary focus. Fine-tuning difficulty is always a major challenge in these games, alongside integrating user feedback effectively. We continue to analyze this data. Observing player behavior and how they interacted with the game's systems was incredibly valuable. Nightreign introduces several new rules and mechanics, so understanding player reception was crucial for refining the onboarding process and ensuring these systems are clearly communicated at launch.

What has it been like taking on the director role for this project? Did Miyazaki offer any specific advice on directing a video game?

As director, my mindset was straightforward: I had to commit fully. Since I championed the initial idea, I was deeply invested, but I quickly realized the necessity of unwavering resolve to see the project through to completion.

The key advice from Miyazaki and other seasoned directors was that a director must be decisive. In the day-to-day development, aspects I might have previously overlooked now required rigorous scrutiny. I had to adopt a more critical eye and exercise greater discipline to ensure every decision served the project's overall best interest.

Returning to a previous point, you stated that Nightreign can only be played solo or with a full group of three. If two players team up, the game matchmakes a third. Why isn't there a dedicated two-player cooperative option?

The straightforward answer is that a dedicated two-player option was an oversight during development, and we apologize for that. Our primary focus was creating a three-player cooperative experience, balanced specifically for that dynamic. We also dedicated significant effort to crafting a rewarding solo experience within the framework of the new rules. Unfortunately, this focus meant the duo option was neglected. We are actively considering addressing this in post-launch support.

Could you elaborate on how the game scales difficulty for solo players? Are there unique mechanics or adjustments when playing alone versus in a squad?

Although the game is designed for three players, solo play is a natural and encouraged part of the core loop. Players often operate independently even in a group, exploring different map areas and gathering resources before reuniting for boss encounters.

For solo players, enemy aggressiveness and activity levels are specifically tuned to prevent overwhelming situations, something that might be less noticeable in multiplayer. Additionally, various game parameters dynamically adjust based on the number of players in a session. We hope these measures create a fair and engaging challenge for those playing alone.

Solo play also lacks the ability to be revived by teammates, inherently increasing the challenge. To compensate, we've incorporated a self-revive mechanic that players can discover on the map. This provides additional opportunities to learn boss patterns and progress without restarting from the beginning.

Shifting to the narrative, how does Nightreign fit into the established lore of Elden Ring?

Nightreign shares the foundational setting of the Elden Ring world but presents an alternate timeline. The central concept is the 'Night Lord,' an abstract calamity that has befallen the Lands Between. Unlike a designed event, this is a natural disaster that requires opposition. This opposition comes from the 'Nightfarers,' warriors tasked with confronting and defeating the Night Lord to end this cataclysm.

The story unfolds through a series of character-focused remembrances rather than a traditional linear narrative. What led to this decision?

The Night Lord calamity brings together these Nightfaring warriors from different eras and cultures with the shared prophecy of defeating this threat. However, that is not their only motivation. Each character has personal goals, motivations, and struggles. We hope players enjoy uncovering these individual backstories and forming attachments. Since players do not create their own character this time, we aimed to provide deep, explorable characters for players to connect with and choose their favorites.

While designed as a co-op PvE experience, PvP has been a staple in FromSoftware's RPGs. Was incorporating PvP, such as squad invasions, ever considered for Nightreign?

PvP was not a active consideration from the outset. Our core vision was a cooperative multiplayer experience. As we developed unique character actions and abilities, we found that balancing them for PvP would not only be extremely difficult but would also detract from the distinct identity and scope we envisioned for each character. Our priority was firmly on delivering a focused PvE co-op experience.

How does your balancing philosophy for Nightreign, a co-op focused game, differ from a more single-player oriented title like the base Elden Ring, which also includes PvP?

For single-player games like Elden Ring, balancing involves considering level design, enemy placement, and a vast array of player builds and equipment. Nightreign's approach differs; our primary goal was ensuring a fun and cohesive experience for a three-player team, while also ensuring the game remains viable for solo players. This involved meticulously tuning new character abilities and boss encounters—like Gladius, who you faced—for both solo and cooperative party play, which was a central aspect of our balancing strategy.

The bosses in Nightreign appear significantly more challenging than those in Elden Ring, dealing more damage and possessing greater durability, likely due to the three-player balance. Was there a conscious effort to create a higher baseline of difficulty that would be appropriate for this cooperative structure?

The three-day/night cycle structure of Nightreign is key. We designed the final boss encounter to be a culmination of the players' progress and learning during that time. Unlike Elden Ring, where you can extensively prepare and retry bosses, Nightreign imposes a stricter timeframe. This structural constraint directly influenced boss balancing.

[The bosses] are intended to be imposing, formidable challenges upon first encounter.

The bosses are intended to be imposing, formidable challenges upon first encounter. However, through observation and learning within the cycle, players can ultimately triumph. Striking the right balance between the structural rhythm and an exhilarating boss fight was a major focus.

Post-game content like New Game Plus is a hallmark of FromSoftware games. What endgame features can players expect after defeating the eight Nightlords?

We have included post-game content for players who complete the main campaign. We believe the journey to defeat all eight Nightlords offers substantial content. Beyond that, players can unlock new relics and relic rites, allowing for deeper character customization. Elements like relics and character narratives accumulate throughout the game, with no time constraints on exploration. We hope these incentives encourage players to continue exploring everything Nightreign has to offer.

Was making Nightreign a free-to-play title ever considered? Given the prevalence of free-to-play models in the multiplayer space, what led to the decision for a premium price point?

Free-to-play was discussed, but considering our resources, timeline, and the specific vision we were developing, we concluded that a premium model—priced below a full AAA title—was the best path for Nightreign. We are confident the game offers enough content and a rich enough experience to justify its price.

Finally, what aspect of Nightreign are you most proud of accomplishing?

In broad terms, I am immensely pleased that we successfully translated the initial concept into a finished game. Seeing the vision realized—from the three-day cycle structure to the way players converge in this condensed RPG system to collaboratively face bosses—is incredibly rewarding. Bringing a game to completion is a remarkable achievement, and I am deeply thankful to the team for their dedication in making this concept a reality. That is certainly what I'm most proud of.
