A new report has unveiled fresh details about Dragon Age: The Veilguard's troubled development cycle, sparking renewed worries about BioWare's future.

Earlier this year, EA disclosed that The Veilguard fell roughly 50% short of sales projections, coinciding with game director Corrine Busche's departure from the studio. Simultaneously, numerous BioWare employees involved in the project faced layoffs. That same month, BioWare confirmed no further updates would come to The Veilguard, effectively concluding post-launch support.

Following IGN's previous coverage of the game's transformation from single-player to live-service and back again, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier offered deeper insight into its developmental struggles. His report explains why longtime fans felt disappointed by the absence of impactful player choices - a hallmark of BioWare's most acclaimed titles.

Schreier's investigation uncovered how remnants from The Veilguard's abandoned multiplayer concept affected critical elements like narrative tone, dialogue system, and player agency. Most strikingly, BioWare executives reportedly panicked after Square Enix's Forspoken flopped, fearing similar failur due to the game's initial irreverent tone. This prompted eleventh-hour rewrites aiming for more serious dialogue, ultimately creating jarring tonal shifts.

The studio also struggled internally with marketing direction ("early trailers sparked criticism for making Dragon Age resemble Fortnite rather than its signature dark fantasy roots, raising doubts about EA's promotional strategy").

EA chose not to respond to Bloomberg's requests for comment.

The fallout leaves BioWare's fate uncertain. While a skeleton crew continues developing Mass Effect 5, The Veilguard's commercial failure - following Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem - marks BioWare's third consecutive disappointment. Speculation mounts about potential studio closure.

TD Cowen analyst Doug Creutz told Bloomberg that while EA needs non-sports IPs, "shutting BioWare tomorrow wouldn't shock me... It's been over ten years since their last major success."
