When Remedy Entertainment, the masterminds behind the acclaimed single-player experience *Control*, announced their venture into multiplayer gaming with *FBC: Firebreak*, skepticism was inevitable. Yet, after a hands-off demo, it became evident that my doubts were misplaced. *FBC: Firebreak* emerges as a breath of fresh air in the crowded multiplayer shooter genre, set six years after the events of *Control*. This three-player PvE first-person shooter promises originality and an engaging experience without demanding the exhaustive commitment that many modern games require. As game director Mike Kayatta emphasized, "We're not about daily check-ins. We're not interested in monthly grinds. We don't want to give anybody a second job." This philosophy sets *FBC: Firebreak* apart, offering players the freedom to enjoy the game on their terms.

In *FBC: Firebreak*, players take on the role of volunteer first responders within The Oldest House, equipped with an array of bizarre weaponry. The game's premise is simple yet compelling: you're tasked with managing crises as ordinary individuals thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Whether you're a secretary or a ranger, you're part of the Federal Bureau of Control's effort to contain chaos, albeit in a somewhat expendable capacity.

Upon logging into *FBC: Firebreak*, players select a Job (mission), a Crisis Kit (loadout), and set the Threat Level (difficulty) and Clearance Level, which dictates the number of zones to navigate. These zones, separated by containment doors, lead to different stages of the Job. In the demo, the mission "Paper Chase" unfolds in a seemingly mundane office section of the FBC building, where players must combat the spreading Hiss. The game encourages exploration for currency, which can be used to upgrade and purchase new gear, though this increases the risk of not making it back to HQ safely.

Play

*FBC: Firebreak* distinguishes itself with its unique arsenal. From a hand-cranked snowball launcher that can extinguish fires and douse sticky-note monsters to a zapper capable of summoning lightning storms, the weapons have a charmingly homemade feel. Even traditional firearms like machine guns and shotguns are essential, particularly for dealing with the game's quirky enemies, such as the gigantic sticky-note monster reminiscent of Spider-Man 3's Sandman.

Play

Beyond its weaponry, *FBC: Firebreak* introduces engaging in-universe mechanics. Players can replenish ammo from office supply shelves, construct makeshift turrets, use stereo speakers to repel the Hiss, and utilize rinse stations to remove sticky notes. Unlockable Perks add depth and variety, such as bullets returning to the clip upon missing or extinguishing oneself by jumping. These Perks can be enhanced and shared with teammates, fostering cooperative play.

Flexibility is key in *FBC: Firebreak*, as it supports solo, duo, and trio play. Remedy aims for a lower minimum PC spec while also supporting advanced features like DLSS4, nVidia Reflex, and full ray-tracing. The game will be Steam Deck verified and available on Xbox and PC Game Pass, as well as PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium from day one. While a post-launch content plan remains under wraps, the game will feature paid cosmetics as its only microtransactions.

While I haven't yet played *FBC: Firebreak*, the game's unique approach and design certainly pass the initial test. It's clear that this is no ordinary multiplayer shooter, and its commitment to a flexible, engaging experience without the need for constant grinding is a welcome return to a more relaxed gaming era.
