Hi, I'm Simon, and I'll be sharing my review of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach for IGN. As most fans know, the first Death Stranding sparked wildly different reactions - which makes it helpful to explain my perspective on Hideo Kojima's 2019 sci-fi masterpiece before discussing its sequel.

While Tristan Ogilvie handled IGN's original Death Stranding review (scoring it 6.8/10), my own impressions sit somewhere between skeptical admiration and measured appreciation. Artistic experiences inevitably resonate differently - my takeaways weren't drastically opposed to Tristan's, though I'll clarify what worked (and didn't) for me personally.

The narrative remains Death Stranding's most polarizing achievement. What began as bewildering mythology gradually revealed profound emotional depth - particularly Sam's bond with Lou and Cliff Unger's tragic dynamic with Die-Hardman. Tommie Earl Jenkins' climactic performance stands among gaming's most heartbreaking moments, supported by stellar turns from Margaret Qualley and Léa Seydoux. This sequel's mysterious newcomers (like Elle Fanning's suspicious "Tomorrow") have me equally intrigued.

Kojima blends intimate human drama with extinction-level threats masterfully. Like Arrival or The Road, it balances sweeping apocalyptic imagery with raw personal stakes - whether contemplating parenthood amidst eldritch horrors or finding solace in Low Roar's soundtrack during solitary treks. Despite dense terminology, universal themes of connection persevered throughout my 40-hour journey.

"This epitomizes sci-fi's power - vast stakes anchored in personal vulnerability."

Gameplay improvements have me optimistic for the sequel. While thematic brilliance compensated for pacing issues, early deliveries often felt monotonous until unlocking ziplines and motorcycles in the Director's Cut. Community-built infrastructure also transformed later chapters - I'm hoping Death Stranding 2 incorporates these quality-of-life features sooner.

Combat proved my biggest hurdle. Though conceptually creative (urine grenades versus oil beasts), BT encounters grew repetitive, while human fights encouraged avoidance. Early footage suggesting expanded tactical options - without sacrificing vulnerability - seems promising.

Ultimately, I admired Death Stranding's vision more than consistently enjoyed playing it. June 23rd's review will reveal whether its sequel delivers equally compelling storytelling while better sustaining engagement between groundbreaking cutscenes. Based on previews, Kojima appears poised to meet that challenge.
