Scalebound was once heralded as one of the most ambitious action projects of its era, blending dynamic combat, immersive music, and a novel system of interaction with a colossal dragon companion. As one of the rare Xbox One exclusives, it sparked immense interest but unfortunately never reached release. Announced in 2014, the project was officially terminated by Microsoft in 2017.
Recently, Clovers Inc's official X account posted a video featuring Hideki Kamiya and his colleagues reviewing archived gameplay footage of Scalebound. Kamiya shared nostalgic reflections on the game's development process and expressed ongoing pride in the project despite its cancellation. He further amplified the message by retweeting the video with a direct call to action: "Come on, Phil, let's do this!" This was a clear nod to Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft's gaming division, signaling Kamiya's interest in reviving the game. This isn't the first time Kamiya has voiced his desire to revisit Scalebound; in early 2022, he mentioned his willingness to discuss resuming development with Microsoft.
Discussions about Scalebound's potential return have been recurring, with rumors intensifying in early 2023 about a possible reboot. However, no official confirmation has come from Microsoft. In an interview with Game Watch, a Japanese publication, Phil Spencer responded to questions about Scalebound with a smile and a non-committal, "I have nothing to add at this time."
Even if Microsoft does express renewed interest, a swift revival of Scalebound isn't on the immediate horizon. Hideki Kamiya is currently engaged with his studio, Clovers Inc, working on a new installment of Okami. Should Xbox decide to greenlight the project, Kamiya's involvement would only commence after his current commitments are fulfilled. Nonetheless, the enduring interest in Scalebound over the years offers hope that one day, gamers might finally witness the long-awaited release of this ambitious title.
