"Resident Evil 2 and 4 Remakes: A Daunting Development Journey"

Yasuhiro Anpo, the visionary director behind the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4, shared the compelling story behind the decision to revive the iconic 1998 game. He noted, "We realized: people really want this to happen." This realization came after observing the fervent desire from fans to see the classic return to its former glory. In response, producer Hirabayashi confidently declared, "Alright, we'll do it."

Initially, the team at Capcom contemplated starting the remake project with Resident Evil 4. However, after thorough discussions, they recognized that RE4 was already hailed as nearly perfect, and any alterations could be risky. Consequently, the focus shifted to the earlier installment, which was in dire need of modernization. To ensure they met fan expectations, the developers delved into fan projects, gaining insights into what players truly desired from a Resident Evil 2 remake.

Despite Capcom's enthusiasm, doubts lingered among fans even after the successful releases of the remakes and the announcement of the next one. Many argued that Resident Evil 4, unlike its predecessors, did not require an update to the same extent. The original Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, released in the 1990s on the original PlayStation, featured elements like fixed camera angles and clunky controls that had become outdated. In contrast, Resident Evil 4, launched in 2005, revolutionized the survival horror genre and was still cherished by many.

Despite these initial reservations, the Resident Evil 4 remake successfully captured the essence of the original while significantly enhancing gameplay and narrative elements. The commercial triumph and overwhelmingly positive critical feedback validated Capcom's decision, demonstrating that even a game considered nearly untouchable could be respectfully reimagined with a fresh, creative approach.
