Games Workshop was compelled to take its official website, Warhammer.com, offline after scalpers created chaos during the pre-order launch for the Siege of Terra: End of Ruin special edition book.
The Warhammer publisher introduced pre-orders for the highly anticipated limited edition of Siege of Terra: End of Ruin—a new anthology set after the climactic Siege of Terra during the Horus Heresy. For newcomers, the Horus Heresy marks the catastrophic Space Marine civil war that unfolded 10,000 years before the current Warhammer 40,000 timeline. This pivotal event shaped the foundations of 40K's grimdark universe and explains how the Emperor became confined to the Golden Throne.
While Siege of Terra: End of Ruin excites lore enthusiasts, its special edition proves particularly alluring. It boasts a leather-effect cover with gold foil detailing, gilded page edges, and a metallic Imperial eagle emblem.

Games Workshop had announced the limited edition would be available "strictly while stocks last," with sales commencing at 10am UK time on June 10. The company also promised a queue system to "ensure fair distribution."
However, the queue system collapsed under heavy demand, leaving frustrated fans unable to complete purchases. As complaints flooded social media platforms and Warhammer communities, Warhammer.com abruptly went offline.
The outage sparked growing frustration among collectors who had cleared their schedules for the launch. Eventually, Games Workshop issued an unusual public statement explaining they deliberately took the website offline after detecting scalpers circumventing their systems.
"Scalpers attempted to use bots to bypass our security measures," Games Workshop stated. "Our technical team identified this activity in real-time, prompting us to temporarily shut down Warhammer.com."

Currently, the special edition remains unavailable on Warhammer.com, replaced by an email notification sign-up page. The company emphasized their commitment to ensuring "genuine fans receive the product."
"We're removing all fraudulent orders—this remains our top priority," Games Workshop added. "We appreciate your patience while we resolve these issues."

This transparency has somewhat appeased disappointed fans, with some praising the company's swift action against scalpers as a "minor victory." However, skepticism remains regarding the effectiveness of bot prevention measures. Some community members suggest implementing lottery systems or lore-based verification processes for high-demand items.
Special edition book launches have historically caused similar issues for Games Workshop, with scalpers frequently reselling products at exorbitant prices. The gaming community now watches closely to see how the publisher handles the eventual restock of Siege of Terra: End of Ruin.
This incident occurs during a period of significant success for Games Workshop. The Nottingham-based company recently announced a £20 million (approximately $27 million) staff bonus amid strong financial performance.
While best known for its miniature wargames like Warhammer 40,000, Games Workshop increasingly focuses on intellectual property expansion. Recent successes include the Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 video game and Amazon's Warhammer 40,000 Secret Level animation. The company also finalized a deal with Amazon for Henry Cavill to develop a Warhammer 40,000 cinematic universe, alongside ongoing development of Space Marine 3.
