The director of Avowed, Carrie Patel, has hinted at exciting prospects for the franchise following the game's successful launch. Delve into this article to discover the potential for expansions or sequels and other upcoming plans from the company.

Avowed's release has been a triumph, with both Microsoft and Obsidian expressing satisfaction with its sales figures. In a recent interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025, Avowed's Game Director, Carrie Patel, discussed the potential for expanding the game through sequels or additional content.
While Obsidian has yet to announce specific plans for the franchise, Patel expressed a keen interest in continuing to direct games and exploring new projects. She shared her enthusiasm for potential expansions and sequels, saying, "Now that we've built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I'd love to see us do more with it."

The journey to Avowed's release was filled with challenges and pivotal changes. Patel highlighted the tumultuous development process, describing it as "messy," but ultimately successful.
The project kicked off in 2018, a time when Obsidian was considering selling the company despite successes with titles like Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity. The complexities of remaining independent eventually led to Microsoft acquiring the company, and the game's announcement in 2020. However, the development team had to abandon several planned features, including multiplayer aspects and other functionalities. A significant shift occurred in January 2021, when the project's leadership changed, prompting a reboot of the game.
Under Patel's leadership, managing a team of over 80 people was challenging. She explained, "Normally if you're stepping back and reevaluating your creative direction, putting together a new vertical slice and revised production plans, you would do that with a very small team." Patel's vision led the team to focus on enhancing the story and lore from the Pillars of Eternity series, and shifting from an open world to open zones, which allowed for more detailed and engaging spaces.
Reflecting on her experience, Patel remarked, "There's this interesting thing I've seen on every project I've worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."

With Avowed bringing the Pillars of Eternity franchise back into the spotlight, Obsidian is exploring the possibility of developing a Pillars of Eternity Tactics game. During a Twitch Livestream on February 23, 2025, Josh Sawyer, director of Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, expressed the company's interest in creating a tactics game for the franchise.
Sawyer noted, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like, a lot of people at the studio would like to work on; there are a lot of people who like tactics games." However, he also highlighted the challenges in determining the game's scope, stating, "The difficulty is figuring out the scope of it, in terms of 'how many people' and 'what sort of visual quality are we going for' and 'how big is it?'" The interest in developing a tactics game has been reported previously among the developers, and with Avowed's success, this project might soon become a reality.
Despite these plans, Sawyer remains focused on his vision for Pillars of Eternity 3, aiming for a budget akin to that of Baldur's Gate 3, which stands at $100 million—a significant increase from what was allocated for Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
