A Sense of Authenticity in Fictionalizing Real-Life Places

Ghost of Yōtei aims to authentically represent real-life areas in Japan, with Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido) serving as its primary setting. In a detailed PlayStation Blog post dated May 15, Game Director Nate Fox explained the selection of Hokkaido for protagonist Atsu's journey.

Sucker Punch is no stranger to recreating real-world locations, having previously brought Tsushima Island to life in the first game of the Ghost series. Their efforts were met with acclaim from Japanese critics, leading to Game Director Nate Fox and Creative Director Jason Connell being honored as ambassadors of Tsushima for their cultural representation.

In 2021, Tsushima's Mayor Naoki Hitakatsu expressed gratitude for the team's work in a statement, highlighting the global exposure of Tsushima's history during the Gen-ko period. "Many Japanese are unaware of this history, and internationally, Tsushima is virtually unknown. Their work has been invaluable in sharing our story with stunning graphics and deep narratives," Hitakatsu remarked.

For Ghost of Yōtei, the team's objective remains to deliver an authentic and believable narrative. Hokkaido was selected for its stunning landscapes and its historical significance at the edge of the Japanese empire in 1603. Fox emphasized that this dramatic setting was ideal for introducing Atsu's tale of revenge, illustrating how her actions shape her reputation.

A Perfect Blend of Beauty and Danger

To capture the essence of Hokkaido, the team embarked on two research trips to Japan. These journeys were crucial for understanding the setting and its culture, with Fox describing them as the highlight of the project. One notable visit was to Shiretoko National Park, where the team experienced a unique blend of natural beauty and lurking dangers.

The serene yet perilous environment of the park inspired the game's atmosphere. "This perfect mix of beauty and danger was exactly what we wanted to evoke in our game. That moment confirmed Hokkaido as the right choice," Fox shared.

Another significant location was Mt. Yōtei, known to the Ainu as "Machineshir" or "the Female Mountain." The Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido, have a profound spiritual connection with nature, considering the mountain sacred. For the developers, Mt. Yōtei symbolizes the essence of Hokkaido and represents the family Atsu lost.

Fox noted that interacting with locals and developing new concepts during these trips was incredibly rewarding. The team's experiences helped them encapsulate the spirit of Hokkaido in their fictional portrayal. Acknowledging their initial lack of knowledge about Japanese culture, they plan to share more details on their efforts to address this in upcoming updates.
