Call of Duty Studio Loses Multiplayer Development Director

After a 15-year tenure, Greg Reisdorf, Call of Duty's Multiplayer Creative Director, has departed Sledgehammer Games. His contributions spanned numerous Call of Duty titles, beginning with Modern Warfare 3 (2011). Reisdorf played a pivotal role in the development of Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer, including its live seasonal content and modes.

Reisdorf's journey with Sledgehammer Games, established in 2009, commenced with his work on the original Modern Warfare 3. His involvement extended across various Sledgehammer-developed Call of Duty games, collaborating with Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and Raven Software on projects including the recent Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Call of Duty: Warzone.

In a January 13th Twitter announcement, Reisdorf confirmed his departure on January 10th. He highlighted key achievements, including his contributions to Modern Warfare 3's "Blood Brothers" campaign sequence and the "Scorched Earth" mission.

Reisdorf's influence extended to shaping the "boots on the ground" era of Call of Duty, notably contributing to the gameplay mechanics of Advanced Warfare (boost jumps, dodging, tactical reloads, unique weapon signatures, and energy weapons). He also designed multiplayer maps for this title, though he expressed reservations about the "Pick 13" system.

His reflections on Call of Duty: WW2 addressed the initial concerns surrounding the weapon class restrictions, a decision later reversed. For Call of Duty: Vanguard, he focused on creating engaging, traditional three-lane maps, prioritizing fun gameplay over strict military realism.

Finally, Reisdorf detailed his work on the 2023 Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer, including the recreation of classic Modern Warfare 2 maps and the addition of subtle details (like Shepherd's skull in Rust). As creative director, he oversaw the development of live seasonal modes like Snowfight and Infectious Holiday. His involvement encompassed over 20 modes across Modern Warfare 3's post-launch support. Reisdorf's statement suggests a continued career within the gaming industry.
