Bruce Nesmith, the senior game designer behind the original The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, has expressed awe at the extent of the work done on Bethesda and Virtuos' Oblivion Remastered. In a recent discussion with VideoGamer, Nesmith suggested that the term "remaster" might not fully encapsulate the scope of the project, given the immense effort poured into revitalizing every aspect of Cyrodiil.

"I was expecting a simple texture update," Nesmith shared. "But what they've unveiled is a complete overhaul... From redoing the animations and the animation system, integrating the Unreal Engine, to revamping the leveling system and the user interface, they've touched every part of the game."

Despite no prior official announcement from Bethesda, the launch of Oblivion Remastered yesterday has left fans impressed with the vast array of changes, from minor visual enhancements to significant gameplay modifications. Features like the new sprint mechanic and alterations to the leveling system have led many, including Nesmith, to consider this more of a remake than a mere remaster. "It's almost like Oblivion 2.0," Nesmith remarked, emphasizing the extensive nature of the update. "It's a staggering amount of remastering; the term 'remaster' might not do it justice."

Nesmith further attempted to categorize the project: "The closest that could come [to categorising it] is Oblivion 2.0."

As the gaming community celebrates the reimagined Oblivion, Bethesda has shared insights on their naming choice for the RPG's re-release. In a social media statement released yesterday, the studio clarified their approach: "We never wanted to remake Oblivion. Our goal was to maintain the beloved experience while modernizing it for new players, warts and all."

"We know many of our longtime fans will be thrilled to revisit Oblivion and the land of Cyrodiil," the statement continued. "But there are also so many who have never played it. We can’t thank you enough for all the support you have given us and our games over the years. Our hope with this remaster is, that no matter who you are, when you step out of the Imperial sewer – you feel like you’re experiencing it for the first time."

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered was unexpectedly revealed and released as a shadow drop from Bethesda. It's now available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers able to access it at no additional cost. The modding community has responded enthusiastically to this surprise launch, reinvigorating the Elder Scrolls community.
