Following the game's debut at The Game Awards 2024, which offered a first look at the series' fourth main entry on Unreal Engine 5, this State of Unreal presentation promises to showcase "some of the innovative technology and features that will power The Witcher 4, and beyond."

This could provide fans with an initial glimpse of The Witcher 4's in-engine visuals or even potential gameplay. To date, CDPR has only released a cinematic CGI trailer, which was visually impressive and notably confirmed Ciri as the new central protagonist.

It's also significant that CDPR mentioned the technology will be used "beyond" this project. This strongly suggests Unreal Engine 5 will be the foundation for other upcoming CDPR titles, such as the highly anticipated Cyberpunk sequel, though the studio has not made any official confirmations yet.

Innovation as a Core Principle: Every Game Must Bring Something New

In a recent episode of CDPR's AnsweRED podcast, co-CEO Adam Badowski discussed the studio's forward-thinking approach to The Witcher franchise and the importance of freshness. As the studio celebrates the 10th anniversary of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Badowski reflected on their creative process.

"At the very beginning of developing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, we decided to combine two contrasting elements: water and fire. We intend to maintain this philosophy for all our future projects," he explained. Badowski stressed their commitment to introducing new elements with each game and avoiding repetition across different projects.

"We have to add something that shifts the paradigm. We refuse to simply copy our own successful formulas repeatedly. Every game needs to introduce something genuinely new," Badowski stated. He highlighted this as a fundamental company rule, crediting it as a key factor in The Witcher 3's monumental success.

It will be fascinating to discover what new concepts CDPR integrates into The Witcher 4 and how Ciri's role as protagonist influences not just the narrative, but also core gameplay mechanics. The Witcher 4 is in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. A specific release date has not been announced.
